Five important considerations for responsible use of a patient lifter
- Training - have you had the necessary training to use the lifter? If "No", don't use the lifter.
- Is the hoist fully operational? Is it damaged? - non-functioning or intermittently operational, the batteries "flat", the frame twisted, undue play in the leg spead mechanism? If "Yes", do not use; contact service agent or report to management.
- Is it the appropriate lifter for the client? For example, never use a Stand-up hoist to attempt to stand a non-weight bearing client. Each client should have his/her care plan.
- Ensure that the sling used is appropriate for that client. Check the client's needs and use the sling that best meets issues such as height, weight, body shape, medical conditions, etc. Each client should have his/her care plan. Do NOT use soiled slings as there are important issues of infection control to consider when slings are shared between clients.
